I made my first quilt. I didn’t do it on my own, I took a class and with three other women, along with the teacher, made a quilt in two 6-hour sessions.

It was super easy to do with someone standing over your shoulder saying ‘cut this much’, and ‘sew this here’. If I had to do it on my own it would have been a different story. Still, now that I’ve done it, I should do it again on my own to make sure I know what I was really doing.

I used four different materials with the owls as the centerpiece. The green and brown have trees in them. On the back I used a mushroom pattern. The colors pretty much all go together.

I really do like how this quilt came out. I don’t have a burning desire to do another any time soon. IM likes it too and says I can make one as a bed spread. That seems like a lot of work. We’ll see.

The Mars passport gluebook

I typically work on several gluebooks simultaneously. I like the distraction of moving between several projects. That way I don’t get bored with what I am working on. Last year I was in a small bookshop when I came across some small notebooks created by a company called The Unemployed Philosophers Guild. They have awesome “passport” …

What’s a gluebook, anyway?

I make a lot of collage art and put them in things like gluebook. But what is a gluebook exactly? There isn’t a definitive answer, but it’s not a difficult idea to wrap your head around. A gluebook is a “book” where you glue things (like a collage) in. The following are some examples: A …

Inspirational gluebook artists – Part 1

I’m sometimes asked who inspires me. I have a list of people whose work in collage art, particularly vintage collage art, really inspire me. The first person I want to mention, and probably the person who has most influenced my love of collaging vintage papers, is Mary Green. Who is Mary Green? I discovered Mary’s …

  • Playing with old envelopes this morning. Too bad this postmark isn't clearer. I'm guessing it says 1884. .

  • Here's what I came up with. I've got two larger colorful images on both pages and several background papers that I've cut or torn down to the needed size. All original papers from the 1890s to the 1920s. The only non-original thing is the washi tape to reinforce the gutter of the book pages. .

  • What's on my desk today. It might stay like this for 48 hours at least. Often, with the very old original pieces, it takes a while before it all comes together. I have to place and arrange and swap and shift until it's just right. The time it takes is part of the whole process.
