The year 2020
The last 12 assignments
I'm stopping at 40 prompt assignments and want to do something different for the last weeks of the year.
Instead, I'm going to give you a themed topic to collage. I did these in the old Facebook group, and they're great exercises. Ready?
#2020c45 --Tissue Paper--
Use tissue paper to experiment with layering. Use white or colored tissue paper, or combinations, along with regular collage papers. If you use colored tissue paper, how does it add or change other images you are working with? Does it enhance your images? What happens if you use the tissue paper to mask what is beneath?
Don't forget that you can rubber stamp on tissue paper, and use those images as layers too.
#2020c44 --A sewing project--
Many of us admire sewing and its uses in making art. Gather items that could be used to create a collage about sewing. You can create it with just visual elements, or you can add embellishments that may be 3-dimensional.
#2020c43 --Bon Voyage--
Make a collage of travel-related items or from things that remind you of what a trip could be like. A collage can be inspired from something real or imagined.
#2020c42--Let’s go out to eat--
Have you missed going out to eat these last several months, due to sheltering in place? Make a collage about dining out some place enjoyable. What kinds of ephemera could you use? It might be a challenge to get a hold of a menu these days, but you can find images of a set table, perhaps, or fine china and dinnerware? What about a memorable view?
#2020c41--Junk Mail--
Make a collage only from junk mail you receive over a week.
This collage might not have a vintage feel to it. Also, it’s possible that you are not going to love the elements you choose because your options might be limited, but this exercise makes you focus on the possibilities of what you can create with what you have. So why make something you’re not going to love? There’s a purpose in this assignment and that is for you to think about process: what colors go together, how many elements are sufficient, should you add text, etc. Hopefully, your end product turns out to be something you are proud of.
If you live in a part of the world where you don’t receive junk mail in your mailbox (lucky you!), flyers from shops and grocers in town would be good a good alternative.
